Once becoming one of the most legendary rap crew’s members, Wifisfuneral has had a spot in the underground rap scene for years now. His former collective, Members Only, has achieved a sound which stands out in the underground music scene in terms of popularity.

Members Only and Wifisfuneral (2016)

After leaving Members Only for personal reasons, Wifi decides to release his first album without his crew. Sadly, his best friend and artist XXXTentacion passes away 10 days after the album’s release. Wifisfuneral dedicates the album to his long-friend and takes a small break from making music.

The album opens up with “25 Lighters”, referencing a DJ DMD song with the title. Surprisingly, 25 lighters is often used in hip-hop. But Wifi’s song became the most popular amongst them.

Mostly talking about money, drugs, addiction, fake friends, finding thyself, and grief, Wifisfuneral references to beating his drug addiction and finally connecting with the reality by naming this album “Ethernet”. Simply, the ethernet is the cable connection to internet and stronger than wifi. This theme of derealization keeps on for the entire album. But with each song, Wifisfuneral references another struggle he had during the process.

Successfully telling his story, the album progressively gets faster and more fun. Those dark lyrics you hear in the first couple of songs leave their place to somewhat entertaining chorus’.

In my opinion, Wifisfuneral proves his storytelling ability throughout the album (especially on Genesis).

The album contains heavy bass and obnoxious drums because of Wifi’s underground origins but also does not sound as harsh as his 2017 music.

Another thing Wifisfuneral is known for is his ad-libs. Despite the emotional content of each song, Wifi keeps adding more ad-libs for every. single. one. This, in my opinion, shows his connection to his roots in terms of underground music.
